WHO declares monkeypox outbreak an "Emergency of International Concern"

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the outbreak of monkeypox  in more than 50 countries an "Emergency of International Concern". with men. "While I am declaring a public health emergency of international concern, at the moment this is an outbreak focused on men who have sex with men, particularly those with multiple sex partners. "That means  this is an outbreak that can be stopped with the right strategies in the right groups," he added.


he WHO said declaring an emergency is the highest alert  for health threats but  has no immediate consequences. "It is intended to warn governments to take action to protect their populations," he said. The outbreak of monkeypox virus disease  was confirmed in May. 2022, starting with a cluster of cases found in the UK. From May 18, cases were reported in a growing number of countries and regions, primarily in Europe but also in North and South America, Asia, Africa and Australia. As of July 23, there were a total of 17,186 confirmed cases.72 deaths have been reported since early 2022, all in Africa.
